How to Choose a Web Design Agency

Choosing the wrong agency is expensive — not just in money, but in months of lost momentum. The good news: a few sharp questions separate the studios that deliver from the ones that don't.

Here's the checklist we'd use if we were hiring an agency ourselves.

1. Judge the portfolio, not the pitch

Anyone can talk. Look for real, shipped work — live links, not just mockups — in a style and quality you'd be proud of. Bonus points if they've solved problems like yours or worked in your industry.

2. Check independent reviews

Look beyond testimonials on their own site. Clutch, Google reviews and case studies with real metrics tell you whether clients actually got results. A 4.9★ rating across dozens of reviews is hard to fake.

3. Demand a clear scope and fixed quote

Vague pricing leads to scope creep and surprise invoices. A good agency listens to your goals and returns a transparent, fixed-scope quote — so you know exactly what you're getting and for how much.

4. Understand who actually does the work

Some agencies sell with senior staff, then hand delivery to juniors or subcontractors. Ask who designs, who builds, and who you'll talk to week to week. One accountable team beats a faceless chain.

5. Test their communication early

How fast and clearly they respond before you've paid is the best predictor of how they'll behave during the project. Look for fast replies, honest answers, and a real plan — not just sales pressure.

Red flags to walk away from

  • No live portfolio, or only template-based work.
  • Prices that seem too good to be true (they are).
  • No clear scope, milestones, or contract.
  • Slow, vague, or pushy communication before you've signed.
  • Can't explain how they'll handle SEO, performance, or post-launch support.
